
The LIME laboratory is an advanced Materials Science Lab facility with more than 330 sqm. Its mission is the development and application of integrated, multiscale methodologies for the morphological, compositional, and microstructural characterization of materials, aiming to study the correlations between nanostructure, microstructure, process, properties, and performance in engineering applications, including tribological phenomena and corrosion, through Failure Analysis approaches.

ThermoFischer Helios 5CX
The ThermoFisher Helios 5 CX enables high-resolution imaging, site-specific nanofabrication, and cross-sectional analysis of complex micro- and nano-architected structures. Within SuNRISE, it is used for precise sample preparation, micro- and nano-scale sectioning, and advanced residual stress investigations, supporting the correlation between local architecture, interfaces, and mechanical reliability.

SwissCluster SC-1 ALD/PVD
The SwissCluster SC-1 platform provides conformal ALD and PVD deposition on complex 3D architectures with fine control over thickness, composition, and multilayer design. In SuNRISE, this system is central to engineering interfaces and residual stress gradients in nano-architected materials, enabling stress-tuned multilayers and uniform coatings on high-aspect-ratio structures.

Apreo ChemiSEM S
Category The Apreo ChemiSEM S combines high-resolution SEM imaging with advanced analytical capabilities, including rapid compositional analysis. In SuNRISE, it supports morphological and chemical characterisation of nano-architected systems and coatings, providing essential feedback on coating uniformity, interface quality, and microstructural integrity.

NanoScribe PPTG2
The Nanoscribe PPGT2 enables ultra-high-resolution three-dimensional printing of micro- and nano-architected structures with sub-micron feature control. In SuNRISE, it is the primary tool for fabricating designed architectures used to study size effects, stress localisation, and reliability, serving as the foundation for subsequent coating and characterisation workflows.

Alemnis ASA
The Alemnis ASA system enables precise micro- and nano-mechanical testing, including micropillar compression, micro-cantilever bending, and fracture-focused experiments. Within SuNRISE, it is used to quantify mechanical response, crack initiation, and failure mechanisms in coated and uncoated nano-architected structures, directly linking residual stress states to mechanical reliability.

PVD Plant
The PVD plant enables deposition of metallic and ceramic thin films with controlled thickness and microstructure. In SuNRISE, it complements ALD processes by providing alternative coating routes and interface architectures, supporting comparative studies on residual stress, adhesion, and fracture behaviour in nano-architected systems.
